The Fitness and Mobility Exercise (FAME) Program for Stroke and Neurofitness

Provided by University of British Columbia (UBC)

A medically supervised exercise program for people after stroke.
The Fitness and Mobility Exercise (FAME) is an evidence-based group exercise program developed for people who have had a stroke who have some standing and walking ability, and is offered by community centres across British Columbia.

The FAME website (fameexercise.com) provide up-to-date information about the FAME programs operating within British Columbia, with helpful resources to healthcare providers to share program and registration details with their patients and their families. FAME has been shown to improve mobility, cardiovascular fitness, balance, cognitive function and muscle strength, and reduce falls. It uses principles of high repetitions and moderate intensity to drive neuroplasticity and improve function. FAME is supervised by fitness instructors, personal trainers and/or therapists. Caregivers are allowed to attend the exercise classes with the participant.

While FAME was designed for people who have had a stroke (FAME for Stroke), some centres offer the program for people with stroke and other neurological conditions (FAME for Neurofitness), such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease. For most programs, a doctor’s referral is not required to attend. Please check with the program details at each location.

Cost: Varies depending on community centre program.

Eligibility:
  • Have had a stroke (FAME for Stroke) OR any neurological condition (FAME for Neurofitness, such as multiple sclerosis / Parkinson’s disease)
  • Must be able to stand for 5 minutes
  • Must be able to walk for 10 metres without another person helping them (with or without a walking aid)
